June 13, 2017 Respect Life Update

Greetings everyone!

As we ease into summer I keep thinking about Jesus’ request of His Apostles to “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while” (Mk. 6:31).

I pray you all are able to find moments of summer rest with Him to refresh.  Have a blessed summer!

In just under a month I will be attending the USCCB’s Catholic Convocation.  The bishops have asked those of us attending to consider a few questions & pose them to those we work with — you!

Please pray over the questions & email your responses to me soon.  I value your insight!

  1. Who do you feel is not being reached in our Respect Life work?
  2. Who is struggling in the margins of your parish community?
  3. Who are the poor, the marginalized, those who are ignored in your community?

Thank you!

The 2017-1018 USCCB Respect Life Program is now available…see details under General Info below.

Innocent but on death row…wrongful convictions happen.  Recent data shows some insights…

“…the most recent data from the National Registry of Exonerations points to two factors as the most overwhelmingly prevalent causes of wrongful convictions in death penalty cases: official misconduct and perjury or false accusation…The Registry lists inadequate legal representation at trial as a contributing factor in more than a quarter (218, 26.1%) of these wrongful homicide convictions…The National Registry's race report documents that the ‘rate of official misconduct is considerably higher among murder exonerations with black defendants than those with white defendants…’”

Amen.

Human Cloning/Stem Cell Research

Not only is it unethical, research continues to show that the use of Embryonic Stem Cells is not good science…

“The paper itself makes the case that embryonic stem cells are not needed for even this incremental advance or any subsequent work [diabetes research].  The authors tested batches of SC-β cells made from hESC as well as from hiPSC.  The results were equivalent no matter the starting cell type.  So for any future production of SC-β cells, the authors have shown that no embryonic stem cells are necessary.”

Human Trafficking

Please share with parents…it is essential they know what their children are doing online.  Predators & traffickers “hang out” online where the youth are…

“Teenagers typically do not yet understand the importance of internet safety. Along with the age-old feeling of invulnerability that adolescence has always carried, now there is an unprecedented and intimate access to a world wide community of strangers. So instead of driving too fast or sneaking out at night, your kids might be posting naked pictures on a website you’ve never heard of to people they’ve never met.”

Read more here…

Are you going on vacation this summer?  Did you know *you* can help victims of Human Trafficking by just taking a few photos of your hotel room?

“The TraffickCam app enables travelers to submit pictures of hotel rooms around the world. The images are matched against a national database used by police…those [images] become part of the pipeline that law enforcement can use to track down where the victims are being trafficked.”

Read the story here…

We continue to assist a local safe house, the Free Indeed Home, where girls ages 12-17 who have been sex trafficked can come for healing & restoration.  If you or your group would like to participate in the collection of much-needed items, please contact the Respect Life Office to facilitation this (no drop-offs can be accepted) at
