April 25, 2017 Respect Life Update

Greetings everyone!

“Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness… God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:26-27).

This is such a profound mystery that we are created in His image & likeness, whether we speak of newly-conceived child who is only a few cells in size or the frail person who is terminally ill or the inmate on death row. His image & likeness does not reside in the human labels we often apply to human life, labels that speak more of our own limitations than the wideness of His love.  When He reviewed His creation on each of the preceding days, God noted that it was “good,” but with the creation of man, God “found it very good” (Gen. 1:31).

I will be out of the office on Monday May 1 & Tuesday May 2 to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.  Emails & voicemails will be returned after May 2.  If anyone has an urgent Human Trafficking situation, please text or call me at 504-400-4824.  Thank you all!

Capital Punishment/Mercy behind Bars

Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops’ official statement on the Death Penalty

Please continue to pray for the state of Arkansas as they move forward with their plans to execute 8 men on death row in the span of 10 days beginning Easter Monday.  Please keep these men in your prayers too — for their conversions, for their families, for the victims, & for the victims’ families. A full update can be found here…

Thus far Arkansas has executed 3 inmates this month, the first was Ledell Lee last week.  “Lee's execution went ahead after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected last-minute appeals from his lawyers. But at least one high court justice expressed serious reservations about what critics have called Arkansas' rush to the death chamber…Arkansas dropped plans to execute a second inmate, Stacey Johnson, on Thursday after the state Supreme Court said it wouldn't reconsider his stay, which was issued so Johnson could seek more DNA tests in hopes of proving his innocence.”

Read more here…

On Monday 2 more on death row were executed, Jack Jones & Marcel Williams

Upcoming executions scheduled in the US can be found here

Please pray for the victims, the victims’ families, those on death row, & the families of those on death row.

Mrs. Joy Zainey on God’s Special Children’s Mass…
“God’s Special Children’s Mass was conceived as a result of rejection, disappointment, acceptance, laughter and tears, but the good news is we now have a blessed service truly like no other. Every disturbance is considered a joyful noise, every smile a vision of Christ. Here you will experience pure love and innocence shared by God’s Special Children (and adults) and the extraordinary spirituality they offer and display.  We encourage everyone, those with and without disabilities, to attend this special service.”

But she can speak, feel pain, and fully understands what is happening to her. She is being tortured to death by healthcare professionals who have it in their capacity to provide care and treatment.”

Fertility/Infertility/Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART/IVF)

The April Respect Life focus is on Fertility/Infertility/Assisted Reproductive Technologies

Our spiritual work of mercy

Please join in our prayers during the month of April…

Prayer for those struggling with Infertility:

Mother of Christ, you were graced by God with the privilege of bearing our Divine Savior. You experienced the joys and challenges of being a parent. Your life was blessed with seeing Jesus grow from infancy and childhood, into his adult years of teaching a ministry. With St. Joseph, you created a home for your family to love and share together.  Please intercede before the God of all life, that those struggling with infertility may conceive a baby and raise healthy children, with whom they can share the Lord’s good gifts. May their children honor them and You by lives of virtue and caring for others. May their home be holy and their family be blessed with health, happiness and abiding love. And for those for whom conceiving a child is not possible may their love for each other be fruitful. Help them not to become bitter when they encounter others who devalue life. May those who cannot give birth to a child see other ways in which they can give life to others. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (source:

Do you know someone currently struggling with Infertility?  Reach out & assure her (or him) of your prayers.

Healing after Abortion

The May Respect Life focus is on Healing after Abortion

Our spiritual work of mercy

Please join in our prayers during the month of May…

Lord of all Life,

You have entrusted us to the care of one another,

And called us to be one Body in Christ.

You call us to rejoice with those who rejoice,

And to weep with those who weep.

Hear our prayer today

For our brothers and sisters who have lost children to abortion.

Help us to understand

The pain that is in their hearts,

And to be a living sign to them

Of your welcome, your mercy, and your healing.

Help them to undergo with courage

The process of grief and the journey of healing.

Never allow them to feel alone;

Always refresh them with the presence of Your Spirit

And of their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Console them with the sure hope

That you love and care for their children.

Give them new strength,

That even while they grieve what they have lost,

They may look forward to all the good

That you still have in store for them.

Lord of healing and hope,

Give us all the forgiveness of our sins,

And the joy of your salvation.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Our corporal work of mercy…

The suggested corporal work of mercy for those in parishes focuses on supporting our local Rachel’s Vineyard ministry.  The next Rachel’s Vineyard retreat in the archdiocese will be held November 10, 11, 12, but the Rachel’s Vineyard team is already working behind the scenes preparing to minister & serve those who will come for Jesus’ healing.  To assist them, the Respect Life Office is collecting gift bag to give to those on retreat.  Suggested items include tissues, a votive candle, a journal/tablet, a pen, & a pretty bookmark — all in a nice gift bag.  Also include any prayer offering you will make for them that we can include in our Spiritual Bouquet.  An additional suggestion is to sponsor one who will make the November Rachel’s Vineyard retreat.  This could be done as a group or a parish, & it may be a full ($170) or partial sponsorship.  To arrange pick up of your donated gift bags or to learn more about how to sponsor a Rachel’s Vineyard retreatant, please email the Respect Life Office at
